“PLEASE, JOIN ME ABOARD the Avarice,” Novac Tamoran replied, unaware of why he had even said it. He shook his head, trying to snap out of the strange trance that had overcome him.

Ladgara shot him a scornful glower with one hot-pink eye. “What are you saying?” she growled.

“It’s the Voice,” he answered. “Her desire is my desire. Her will is my will.”

“Listen to yourself,” Ladgara chastised. “I didn’t break you out of prison just to have you roll over and take it lying down like some mangy bitch!”

He blinked vacantly, his expression remaining just as blank as his gaze. It was as though he was doped up, high on drugs. All he could do was sway where he stood and wait for Onelle to come to him.

“Listen to me, and listen to me good, Captain. Raven Nightguard let us rejoin our fleet without so much as a request. But look out there,” she said, pointing at the firefight that was lighting up the sky like a firework show. “They need our help. And I for one intend to give it to her.”

“Her desire is my desire,” he intoned, stuck in an infinite loop like a broken record. “Her will is my will.”

“Fire on that shuttlecraft,” Ladgara barked angrily. She spun around and glared impatiently at the gunner.

“Belay that order,” Tamoran shouted. He turned toward her, his eyes completely black—as if he’d been possessed by a great evil force. “Open hangar bay three and give her permission to land. I’ll see to her personally.”

“Like Helios you will,” Ladgara said, reaching up and seizing him as he tried to shove her out of the way and move past her, but she wouldn’t relinquish her grasp of his leather trench coat.

“Unhand me!” he growled. “As your captain I demand that you...”

“I don’t have time for this,” Ladgara said, drawing out her blaster. “If you don’t stand down, I’ll have not choice but to put a bolt right between eyes.”

“This is mutiny!” he snarled, shaking his fist at her.

Ladgara shrugged. “Stand down and hand control of the ship over to me.”

“Never!” Novac Tamoran growled, spittle flying out of his mouth as he shook with rage. “The Avarice is mine! Do you hear me you traitorous wench? She’s mine!”

With a flash, Ladgara put a bolt right between the eyes of the Pirate King. Then, turning to the stunned faces of the crew, she barked, “I’m the new captain now. If anyone has a problem with that, now’s the time to speak up.”

Not a single crewman challenged her. Instead, they slowly turned back around and quietly returned to doing whatever it was they were doing before her mutinous overthrow of the captain.

“Long live the Pirate Queen,” Ladgara mumbled to herself as she holstered her weapon.

She took a deep breath and calmed herself best she could. She had loved Novac Tamoran about as much as one could love a womanizing, perpetually drunk, completely self-absorbed scoundrel. They’d shared some good times.

But, in the end, she knew that his weakness would be the death of them all.
