âPLEASE, JOIN ME ABOARD the Avarice,â Novac Tamoran replied, unaware of why he had even said it. He shook his head, trying to snap out of the strange trance that had overcome him.
Ladgara shot him a scornful glower with one hot-pink eye. âWhat are you saying?â she growled.
âItâs the Voice,â he answered. âHer desire is my desire. Her will is my will.â
âListen to yourself,â Ladgara chastised. âI didnât break you out of prison just to have you roll over and take it lying down like some mangy bitch!â
He blinked vacantly, his expression remaining just as blank as his gaze. It was as though he was doped up, high on drugs. All he could do was sway where he stood and wait for Onelle to come to him.
âListen to me, and listen to me good, Captain. Raven Nightguard let us rejoin our fleet without so much as a request. But look out there,â she said, pointing at the firefight that was lighting up the sky like a firework show. âThey need our help. And I for one intend to give it to her.â
âHer desire is my desire,â he intoned, stuck in an infinite loop like a broken record. âHer will is my will.â
âFire on that shuttlecraft,â Ladgara barked angrily. She spun around and glared impatiently at the gunner.
âBelay that order,â Tamoran shouted. He turned toward her, his eyes completely blackâas if heâd been possessed by a great evil force. âOpen hangar bay three and give her permission to land. Iâll see to her personally.â
âLike Helios you will,â Ladgara said, reaching up and seizing him as he tried to shove her out of the way and move past her, but she wouldnât relinquish her grasp of his leather trench coat.
âUnhand me!â he growled. âAs your captain I demand that you...â
âI donât have time for this,â Ladgara said, drawing out her blaster. âIf you donât stand down, Iâll have not choice but to put a bolt right between eyes.â
âThis is mutiny!â he snarled, shaking his fist at her.
Ladgara shrugged. âStand down and hand control of the ship over to me.â
âNever!â Novac Tamoran growled, spittle flying out of his mouth as he shook with rage. âThe Avarice is mine! Do you hear me you traitorous wench? Sheâs mine!â
With a flash, Ladgara put a bolt right between the eyes of the Pirate King. Then, turning to the stunned faces of the crew, she barked, âIâm the new captain now. If anyone has a problem with that, nowâs the time to speak up.â
Not a single crewman challenged her. Instead, they slowly turned back around and quietly returned to doing whatever it was they were doing before her mutinous overthrow of the captain.
âLong live the Pirate Queen,â Ladgara mumbled to herself as she holstered her weapon.
She took a deep breath and calmed herself best she could. She had loved Novac Tamoran about as much as one could love a womanizing, perpetually drunk, completely self-absorbed scoundrel. Theyâd shared some good times.
But, in the end, she knew that his weakness would be the death of them all.
